In the field of regenerative energies, ultrasonic welding is very often used in the production of solar thermal energy collectors and thin-film photovoltaic modules (CIS, CIGS, CdTe modules). In the case of solar thermal energy, an aluminum or copper collector plate is essentially welded onto a copper tube through which water flows in order to generate solar-heated household water. With photovoltaics the ultrasonic welding process is used for contacting the active photovoltaic cell so that the current produced can be fed to the electrical load. In addition, ultrasonically-welded IGBTs (power modules), which were mentioned under the heading of power electronics, are used, with the help of frequency inverters, to adapt regeneratively-produced electricity from photovoltaic plants or wind-energy turbines to the public power grid.
